Finishing a Voice: Kaelin on Tone, Vibrato and Style

Your student can sing the notes - now what? Dean Kaelin walks through the finishing work that separates a competent singer from one people want to hear.

Most technique training stops once the break is gone. This session picks up where that leaves off. Dean Kaelin lays out his steps from matching pitch to performing, then focuses on the finishing tools: developing vibrato using a method he adapted from flute teaching, building the consistent tone that makes a singer instantly recognizable, centering vowels forward for Broadway or mid for pop, and singing the same tone at every dynamic level - illustrated with recordings of his own students. He closes with style: syncopation, using pentatonic improvisation to build soulfulness, and learning fast licks by slowing them down and stepping the speed back up.
