Ballantyne: Speech Sounds That Unlock the Mix (Live Lessons)
Watch two full lessons as Ballantyne uses targeted speech phrases, primal sounds and a white-noise speaker to carry singers through the chest-to-mix transition.
This is observed teaching, start to finish - two singers, two real lessons, nothing edited around the hard parts. Ballantyne opens with buzzy semi-occluded work (kazoo, finger kazoo) to mask the transition points, then works targeted speech phrases such as 'I work from home' and 'who was that dog', using the American R to guide articulation into the mix. He layers in primal sounds - sigh, moan, sob, whistle, cough, creak - to jumpstart emotion and rebalance onset. Then he holds a white-noise Bluetooth speaker to the singer's face so she can hear her own formants move. Applied to 'Hold On' and 'Georgia On My Mind'.
